Well hey there! My name is Christine and I have been drinking Butter Coffee for the past week.
Yes, you read that correctly, that is NOT a typo. I didn’t drink BITTER coffee, I drank BETTER coffee, in the form of Bulletproof (butter) coffee this past week.
If you are anything like me, my first reaction to hearing about putting butter or anything else besides cream and sugar in my coffee was…
I think I have been conditioned thus far in my ahem, 40ish years of life to think of fats as evil so putting butter in my coffee was almost unimaginable. But, I am always willing to try new things and keep an open mind (especially when they involve coffee). And once I heard about the potential benefits like enhanced mental function, improved metabolism/calorie burning and increased energy I was itching to give it a try.
Right! So what exactly is this Bulletproof coffee of which I speak and why did I want to try it?
The concept of “butter coffee” is nothing new. In fact the founder of Bulletproof coffee discovered it while trekking high up in the mountains in Tibet, and after making a few tweaks to the original recipe (which included yak butter), he created the blueprint for Bulletproof Coffee which includes a) “upgraded” coffee b) grass fed unsalted butter or grass fed Ghee and c) Brain Octane Oil all blended for 20 or so seconds to frothy, buttery perfection.
And why did I want to try Bulletproof coffee? Well, i’m a fairly healthy eater and am an extremely active person. But (and this is a big but) I have extreme sugar cravings every day in the late afternoon and evening and worse yet, I am hungry, no make that HANGRY almost all of the time.
I should also mention that my energy tends to crash hard around 4:30pm each day and it’s a struggle to stay awake – not a good thing for a super busy mom who still has 8 hours of soccer practice/dinner making/kids homework/work ahead of her.
So what appealed to me most upon hearing about the benefits of Bulletproof coffee (besides the lasting energy boost and metabolic benefits) was that it could help me feel fuller for longer and help reduce my sugar cravings. That sounded like a WIN-WIN (and a few more WINS) to me. But of course the inner skeptic in me needs to “try before I buy” so I conducted my own not-so-scientific experiment this past week by drinking a cup of Bulletproof Coffee every morning. Now, a big personal disclaimer here…
I only had a short time window to try it, but after just one week but here’s what I did discover…
I don’t need (as much) sugar in my coffee! (or sugar in general for that matter). Perhaps it is due to the fact that I am using a higher quality coffee bean with Bulletproof’s “Upgraded Coffee” and that the healthy oils are keeping me satiated but I used way less Stevia than normal and I wasn’t reaching for that bag of wine gums at 2pm like I normally do.
I didn’t get as hangry hungry as I normally do in the late morning and afternoon and I got through my dreaded 4:30pm crash with no fatigue issues (in fact i’m cheerily writing this post during what typically is a snooze-fest time of the day for me).
I have been waking up BEFORE my alarm – This is one is huge peeps! I promise you that I have been going to bed at the exact same time as I normally do (which is generally between 11:30-12:30) and have been waking up feeling great at least 10-15 minutes before my alarm. <INSERT CHOIR SINGING HALLELUJAH!>
