There has been a lot of buzz lately about Dove’s amazing new campaign #ChooseBeautiful. If you haven’t seen it yet, then please take a second to watch it below. Cause believe me, what I am going to tell you after is going to make you want to #ChooseBeautiful
Wow! Pretty powerful huh?
And even as I write this, I would likely STILL #ChooseAverage if presented with the choice of the two doors. Why? Because I have always had a very crticial self image of myself for as long as I can remember. It definitely doesn’t help that another birthday has just come and gone and that I am solidly in my 40’s now.
But, one of the things I am working on this year on top of physically healing myself, is working on stopping all the negative self talk. You know, it creeps up on you all the time. One little glance in a mirror on the way out the door can set me into a tailspin of negatively, or an unflattering pic on Instagram, and don’t even get my started on the mirrors at the gym. Ugh. My oh-so-wise personal trainer tells me to choose to speak to myself like I would my kids or my nieces. It’s hard…but I am working on it cause I would never say anything critical about their appearance to them. Ever.
But…. did you know that negative self talk causes your body to produce Cortisol. Yes, that damn Cortisol – the same hormone that helps in times of danger, but also has ton of negative effects on your body. Worse yet, read this!
Another major negative effect of cortisol is that it inhibits collagen formation. Collagen is a molecule that makes connective tissue. It’s vital for structural support and is found in muscles, tendons and joints, as well as throughout the entire body.
Stress studies done on rats show that collagen loss in the skin was ten times greater than in any other tissue. Remember that during stress the body prioritizes what is important for fight or flight. Wrinkle-free, young looking skin is not one of those priorities.
Do you get this peeps!? We are literally again ourselves with negative self-talk (and lack of sleep, and stress etc etc ). So, as much as every ounce of my being might be telling me to #ChooseAverage, for the sake of my health and my skin I will work on choosing beautiful.
