Whether you’ve had a falling out with a loved one, had a hard day with the kids, you’ve run out of wine (gasp!) or seen something upsetting on the news, some days it can be pretty hard to find a reason to smile. Despite this, a simple smile holds a lot of power and significance in the world, so it’s always beneficial to at least try to plaster one across your face. If you don’t believe me, read some of the five reasons why you should smile more!
Improves Your Mood
Although your emotions are the result of hormones, chemicals, and the brain, certain actions are heavily associated with certain emotions. For example, smiling is heavily associated with happiness, as we tend to smile when we’re feeling happy. For this reason, even you fake a smile, you can trick your brain into thinking that you’re happy, and you will feel happy, even if it’s only for a short amount of time.
When you are happy, endorphins are released, which are a neurotransmitter. This neurotransmitter has been shown to reduce stress and anxiety, as well as improving sleep, reducing blood pressure, and combating feelings of depression. Therefore, if you’re feeling stressed, instead of focusing on your cause of stress, one of the best things that you can do is try to smile through it. Or, if that doesn’t work, there is always wine…
Another big benefit of endorphins is that they can help to boost your self-esteem. Unfortunately, some people avoid smiling altogether, as they are self-conscious about their teeth. If this is the case for you, then you might want to consider visiting a dentist or orthodontist to get your teeth seen to. It might surprise you, but around a quarter of adults require braces (including me!), so if you think you might need braces yourself and want to get your teeth checked, click this link for a list of orthodontists near you.
Makes You Appear Younger
It might seem surprising, but some people avoid smiling, as they are worried that it will give them wrinkles (um, hello Kanye West & Kim Kardashian). I hate to break it to you, but no matter what you do now, you will get wrinkles one day, and what better way to do that than by smiling. Despite this, many people actually believe that smiling helps you to look younger, so now you have no excuse not to.
Makes You Appear Trustworthy
No matter where you come from, everyone recognizes a smile as a sign of happiness. For this reason, it shouldn’t be a surprise that most people will trust you a lot more if you crack a smile, instead of wear a frown or neutral expression. This can help you in many aspects of your life, such as securing business deals at work, or when telling your kids that Santa Claus and the Tooth Fairy really do exist, or like your the President of the US…
This list doesn’t even begin to scratch the surface; There are so many reasons why you should smile more in your everyday life both big & small – walking outside on a sunny fall day, spending time with loved ones, or even just enjoying a good cup of coffee. Keep on smiling everyone!
