How To Make Every Selfie Look Awesome

May 8, 2015

So as you all know as nauseum by now, I just got back from Mom 2.0 Summit in Arizona and there were many many opportunities to get your headshot done, or pose for a portrait or selfie as you rambled through many of the brand booths. Fun!

One afternoon, after I had gotten all pampered at the Dove Beauty Lounge by the uber fabulous Arthur I decided to check out the #KIAmom headshot area….

Now peeps, this was big time. Like professional photographers, a posing coach, big lighting umbrella thingies etc. Intimidating for sure, but I was intrigued. I mean at least my make-up looked good, if not my sweaty-and-needed-to-be-touched-up hair.

As I stood in line watching all those ahead of me effortlessly pose I thought “no problem, i’ve got this”. However, when faced with staring down the lens of the actual camera at go time, I totally froze and made many cardinal headshot errors including laughing way too much AND tipping my chin down instead of out. Ugh.

What not to do folks…chin down and NOT out! And yes, this photo HAS been heavily edited!

Even the awesome and ever helpful Emma Waverman who was behind me in line tried to call out “watch your chin – YOUR CHIN!” but alas, all this did was irritate the sensitive posing coach and make me laugh more 😉

So when my pics came out the other side, I have to confess, I felt kinda awful about them. I mean, I accept that I am in my 40’s, and that I have more than a few laugh lines, but really? REALLY??

But not all was lost. I do have a few tricks up my sleeve that will make even the worst selfie or photo into a thing of beauty (or at the very least shave off a misplaced chin or two).

My Favorite Photo Editors

a) PicMonkey – Ah my beloved PicMonkey. There is no mobile app for it yet, but download your pictures onto your computer and edit away. Super simple re-touching tools like “Nip/Tuck” and “Wrinkle Remover” will have you smoothed out in no time. And no worries about those coffee stained chompers, or lack of makeup – the “Teeth Whitener” or various “Makeup” tools will make you look like you just stepped out of the…well…Dove Beauty Lounge.
b) BeFunky – I have BeFunky on my iPhone 5 and use it ALL THE TIME. Mostly I just use it to add some fun filters, but it does have full functionality like PicMonkey for ‘Touch-Ups”, “Effects”, adding text or overlays, adding frames etc. etc. which will make your selfie snaps post worthy in seconds.
c) FaceTune – I just learned about FaceTune after my less than awesome experience at the head shot booth above. This app will cost you a coupla bucks but it is well worth the money. It’s not quite as intuitive as BeFunky in terms of one touch changes, but if you can swipe your finger along your screen and you exercise a little patience then FaceTune is well worth the money!
