how to survive long flights with kids

In just a few short days me and my family will be jetting off to Cancun, Mexico for 9 days of fun in the sun. It’s been a long time since we have all gone on a tropical vacation like this and we are all super excited. Well, except for the getting there part.

Maybe it’s just me but I am not the best flyer. It’s not that I get all paranoid about crashing or hijackings or “snakes on a plane” type disaster situations, it’s just that I absolutely hate being confined to a small space for a long period of time. And maybe some of you international jet setters may scoff at what I consider a long time but 6+ hours in any small metal tube makes me feel very squirrelly and stressed out. Factor in 2 kids under the age of 10 that are still quite demanding and who get easily bored and it all makes for a VERY long plane ride.

So, how do you survive a long plane ride with your kids so that you don’t decide to leave them at home the next time?!

Bring lots of snacks

Those mini cans of pringles and stale crackers just don’t cut it after the first few hours so I am stocking my bag with lots of dried fruit leather, nuts and granola bars (and of course some candy for when I need to bribe them to be good). Use one of those plastic organizer containers from a dollar store and let your kids pick and choose what they want to eat without bugging you every 10 minutes.

Pack extra clothes

Without fail, every single trip I have taken with my kids results in someone spilling a large quantity of something all over themselves so I always pack a full set of clothes for everyone in their packs for when disaster inevitable strikes (it usually involves a can of pop or juice and occasionally bodily fluids).

Bring a few “surprises” on board

I like to hit the dollar store before leaving and pick up cheap books, puzzles, activity books and toys. I wrap them up and every hour or so the boys can open one “surprise”. This usually keeps them entertained for at least 10 minutes each hour until they put their heads back in their iPads.

Download your favorite Netflix shows

Yes, that’s right – if you haven’t heard about this already, this is the most fantastic news! You can now download some of your favorite Netflix shows onto your smart device to watch while offline! Just look for the little white “download” icon to the far right of each episode to see if it is downloadable. I have already downloaded the entire first season of the Crown to binge watch for 6 straight hours – woo hoo! There is also a new “My Downloads” section and a separate “Available for Download” menu option too to make your life even easier!

So what are some of your tips and tricks to keep your kids (and yourself) sane while on a long plane ride besides hitting the bar cart early and often?! 🙂

Awesome tips Christine! I haven’t been on many long flights with my little but lots of small connecting flights and I try to practice the surprise gift and snacks-to-go. This Netflix revelations is great news.
